Do You Have a Snack Time During the School Day?

I wanted to find out where people stand on having snack time during the school day.

My opinion?
Pros - it helps if you have an early or late lunch time, morning snack can help those kids who don't get a good breakfast, it can provide a much-needed brain break

Cons - messy, takes time, if you go the group snack route a lot of parents don't send in anything, if you go the individual route some kids never have anything

What are your thoughts?

We have snack every day, but we eat lunch at 10am...we eat in the hallway, so no class mess =)

We used to have an individual snack. It had to be nutritional, if it was chips or chocolate, we didn't let them eat it. Then our school applied for a grant and got it. This was all fruits and veggies. It allowed the kids a chance to try new foods. Then that grant was over, but our district found money to give us a small snack every day. Its crackers, fruit, and veggies. My second graders are pretty good about cleaning up. But then I insist on it.

We do have snack at our school. Most classes it is individual but some classes have tried the snack calendar and parents send in on their day for the whole class. Thank you for following my blog so I could find yours!

We have snack at 9. Students can read and do reading work while eating snack. It is optional and students bring snack from home. We talk about what is healthy and appropriate for snack.

Our school frowns on snacks in the upper grade (I teach 6th right now) but we don't have lunch until 1:00. That's really late for my kiddos, especially when my stomach is rumbling by 11. I let my kids have snacks last year at 11, but it was very inconvenient for the same cons you listed above. Plus, my students were taking advantage and really pushing the "small" part of the snack stipulation by bringing things like an entire box of cereal. I didn't do it this year and they have survived just fine, but I would definitely do it in the younger grades if it was needed. I'm teaching 3rd grade next year so I'll have to see what my other teammates do.

Thanks for stopping by my blog! I'm your newest follower. :)
